So I’ve seen some people that are mad the romance in LoK was basically resolved at the end of Book One. Here is what you have to remember:

  • Nickelodeon initially ordered twelve episodes.
  • There was no guarantee (although probably a good chance) that there would be any more.
  • Mike and Bryan were asked to make twelve episodes, so they made twelve episodes.
  • Since they had no way of knowing there would eventually be 52 episodes to work with, presumably they wrote the story to be as self-contained as possible.
  • They decided to include a subplot in which their protagonist, Korra, develops feelings for her firebender friend, Mako.
  • They wanted to give Korra a happy ending (which they have said outright in addition to, you know, actually giving her one).
  • In doing so, they resolved her romantic arc in her favor.

Can the narrative usefulness of a love triangle in a miniseries with significant time constraints be debated? Absolutely. Are you free to disagree with Korra’s choice of a partner, and the mistakes both she and he made along the way? Sure. But would most people be satisfied if the protagonist of a standalone miniseries was involved in a romantic subplot in which there was hinting and sexual tension galore, only to have her love interest not end up with her? Probably not.

This is also why Korra was given her powers back; it’s not narratively satisfying to leave your hero broken and utterly devastated, at least if you want a happy ending. You are of course free to disagree with the execution of said happy ending, but don’t be surprised that it exists.

As someone who loves Korra as a character and enjoys her relationship with Mako, I would have liked more time spent on the resolution of both plotlines, but in the end I think Mike and Bryan (mostly) did the best they could with what they were given. If you feel differently, you’re entitled to your opinion, but please understand the context in which these writing decisions were made.
